THE COUNTING HOUSE
The redevelopment of The Counting House in Hull involved a comprehensive refurbishment alongside the addition of a modern rooftop terrace, designed to provide valuable additional office space while fully capitalising on its prominent waterfront location. The construction of the new extension required the removal of the existing roof as there was insufficient headroom to fit any meaningful floorspace. The removal of the roof provided the opportunity to create a sensitively designed extension, carefully proportioned and minimal in appearance to reduce any visual impact on the Conservation Area. BSB Architecture worked closely with a Heritage Consultant throughout the design process, ensuring that the proposals met both modern needs and heritage considerations. This collaborative approach led to a successful planning outcome, preserving the integrity of the heritage asset while securing new investment in the area. The project mirrors successful regeneration strategies implemented in other parts of the city, including the redevelopment of the nearby Fruit Market. Extensive work on three-dimensional visuals and photomontages allowed for a detailed analysis of the extension’s potential impact on the heritage asset. This in-depth examination provided clear evidence that the development would not adversely affect the Conservation Area and contributed to a positive outcome for the client.
